Frequently Asked Questions
Singing Workshops and Events
Do I need to be a practiced singer?
Not at all! The workshops are designed for ALL voices so whether you are a seasoned singer performing regularly with a choir or you have never sang a note then we are for you. Songs are taught in easy steps to be able to learn quickly for people at all confidence levels.
Do I have to commit to coming along every session?
No not at all! The sessions are workshop style and are run monthly featuring both previously learnt songs as well as new material each month. Come as little or as often as you like.
Are children welcome?
These workshops are not designed for Children although older children/teens who are keen to engage fully and sing with us for the session are welcome of course.
What kind of music do you sing?
We sing very easy simple, short songs in harmony and rounds. Songs are sourced from around the world and have very much of a heart centred spiritual feel without being religious. Both uplifting and mindful, sometime softer and more intimate in nature, we explore songs in many languages though the majority is sung in English. The harmony style is SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass) and everything is taught by ear. Please see here for some examples of what we sing.
What do I need to bring?
You need to bring a bottle of water, (hot drinks and cake included in ticket price) and of course your voice, with a willingness to share it! And some ever important enthusiasm!
What if I get it wrong?
These workshops are made for mistakes, how else will we learn? We ALL make mistakes when we are learning and no body is judging you. You will get it in the end! The workshops are designed to be fun and light hearted, we are welcoming, encouraging and keen to help you get results.
But I can’t sing !!??!!!
Is the most common phrase used in resistance to coming along.
FACT: Amusia is the term used for people that have difficulty discriminating between musical notes and recognising melodies. The condition is not due to a hearing loss or previous brain injury but rather a neurological inability to process music. This is RARE and affects around 1.5% of the population.
What does a typical session look like?
We gather in a circle to sing. This is a wonderful way to feel fully engaged with all members of the group. It gives for a far more inclusive sessions and people tend to feel a lot more ‘held’ in this fashion.
We will do some simple vocal warm us songs and then dive in to learning harmonies. We have a couple of short breaks through out to have a cuppa and some cake, a chat and a giggle. You will get the opportunity to learn all parts of the songs as they are taught and then choose which part you would like to sing given the comfort level of your voice, or which ever part you like the most! The point is to enjoy yourself and discover your voice with us.
